"THE SQUIRES" CURTIS KNIGHT WITH JIMI HENDRIX
... ...On a day that would influence his destiny, in a Times Square hotel, in 1964 called, The Hotel America, Curtis Knight would meet a man who would alter the face of rock'n'roll forever.
In the lobby of the rundown Hotel America was a recording studio and Curtis had stopped to see someone. Standing at the elevator in the lobby of that hotel was Jimi Hendrix, broke, hungry, minus his guitar because he had sold it to get money to survive.
Their musical union was to be a prelude to the music world's discovery of Jimi Hendrix. Curtis gave him a guitar and amp, and helped him out financially.
1966 Jimi became a co-featured artist with Curtis Knight and the Squires, and the group became one of the hottest acts on the rock circuit. It was Jimi's first opportunity to express himself musically.
Jimi had been back-up musician for touring soul groups such as Ike & Tina Turner, Little Richard, the Isley Brothers, where he was only allowed to play their music as it was recorded on their records.
Jimi had grown tired of being a musical puppet and decided to take his chances in New York City.
