What is CúRoí ?

CúRoí is a sorcerer from Keltic legend that lived in the southern part of modern-day Ireland. This sorcerer was responsible for maintaining the balance between good and evil. There is another definition for the word CúRoí ; Cú : the keltic word for dog, and Roí : meaning Kingly or Grand.

It is a combination of these definitions and our Irish Wolfhound (the largest dog in the world) that motivated us to name our kennel CúRoí .

Annemie Smits and Jo Hoffmann……..married 20 years; our acquaintance with the Irish wolfhound occured in the first year of marriage.

Our first encounter with these "Gentle Giants", at an exhibition in Luxemburg, was so impressive that it turned our world upside-down. We were, and continue to be, totally crazy about this breed.

We began with a puppy, but within a few years, the number of dogs increased dramatically. Needless to say, with every new-comer came a renovation in the house interior and transportation. We have one iron-clad rule: the dogs live inside the house !

This rule remained when we decided, approximately 10 years later, to breed Irish Wolfhounds even the puppies are raised within the home.

We often think back on our first dogs, Barca, Lobo and Iris. When we look back and examine this "first generation" all of whom where older than 10 years, we notice their wonderful personality……a personality that earns the highest respect !! This continues to be true of later and current generations. This is most likely the reason that people love this breed, not to mention their unquestionable loyalty. The loyalty of this breed is apparant in "Legend of Gelert" ; should men make the acquaintance of the Irish Wolfhound from closeby, legend becomes reality !

Over the years, our knowledge of this breed has not been confined to the Netherlands, but has come frome other countries, such as Belgium, Germany, England, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, France and Italy. Even after many long years of experience, we continue to learn from this fascinating breed. It is this experience and knowledge that allow us to breed the Irish Wolfhound.

What does CúRoí stand for ?

After years of experience – and knowledgebuilding, we have evolved our own norms regarding the breeding and care of the Irish Wolfhound, and we would like to share these with you.

We are first breed – lover and second breeder;

We breed to create better, not more ;

The dogs live with us in the house, and we expect the puppies we breed to receive the same situation elsewhere ;

Our breedingprogram contains 3 aspects: health, character and beauty, and we strive for the optimum by all 3 ;

Our puppies are raised in the home, and specifically, the learning and social aspects receive our upmost attention ;

We feel a responsibility towards our puppies, and this will always remain available and provide support for the puppies and owners ;

We strive for a cooperation with other Irish Wolfhound breeders, both domestic and foreign, to continue and protect the health and well-being of this breed.
